What is forgiveness, really? And why did Jesus place such emphasis on it? In Matthew 18:21-22, Peter asked Jesus how often he should forgive his brother — up to seven times? Jesus answered, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.” That number isn’t a literal scorecard. It’s an impossibility in human strength.
