The Power of the Tongue and the Issues of the Heart
What we believe in our hearts, we speak with our mouths and live out in our lives.
Luke 6:45 (NKJV) “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
Our words and actions are like seeds. Whatever we sow into our own lives or into the lives of others will produce fruit.
Jesus told the Parable of the Sower in Matthew 13:1–9. A man went out to sow seed. Some fell by the wayside and birds ate it. Some fell on stony ground, sprang up quickly, but withered because of shallow roots. Some fell among thorns, and the thorns choked them. But some fell on good soil and produced a crop—some thirtyfold, some sixtyfold, some a hundredfold.
The point is clear: The seed is the Word. The soil is our hearts. But our words are also seeds. What we speak over ourselves, our families, our circumstances, our future, all of it matters. Those words either plant life or plant death.
If we constantly judge others—criticizing every action, every word, we will feel judged in return, even when no one is actually judging us. But when we sow encouragement, love, acceptance, forgiveness, that’s exactly what returns to us.
What we believe in our hearts about our own lives, what we speak over ourselves, what we speak over others, it all has impact.
Sickness, poverty, war, murder, abuse- these are not the judgment of an angry God. Jesus said the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). And sometimes the thief uses words and actions, even those of well-meaning Christians, to do it.
We have to be so careful what we say and do. Proverbs 4:23 tells us: “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.”
Everything in our lives flows from the heart. Our present and our future are shaped by what’s in there. We live out of the abundance of our hearts.
That’s why we must guard what we allow in and what we allow out.
Be careful that what we say about ourselves lines up with what God says about us. Because what we believe and speak over ourselves is what we will live out.
Be careful who speaks into our lives. Does what they say line up with what God says? Use the Word of God as a filter. Let Scripture be the mirror that shows us the truth about our hearts and about others.
Our words are powerful. They can build up or tear down. They can release blessing or release curse. They can plant seeds of life or seeds of destruction.
Let’s choose today to speak what God speaks. To believe what God believes about us. To sow seeds that produce a harvest of life, thirtyfold, sixtyfold, a hundredfold.
Declare this with me: “Lord, I guard my heart with all diligence. Out of the abundance of my heart, my mouth speaks. I choose to speak Your truth over myself, my family, and my future. I reject every lie, every judgment, every negative word that does not align with Your Word. I sow seeds of life, love, faith, and blessing today. Let my words produce a harvest that glorifies You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
